THE future of ironman events in Cairns are in good hands if Saturday’s Ironkids mini-triathlon was any indication.

Hundreds of youngsters lined up along the Cairns Esplanade for the “kids only” version of yesterday’s big event.

Edge Hill twins Tanner and Kalani Williams, 6, were among the fledgling athletes to take part in the 50m swim, 1km cycle and 500m run.

Mum Hayley Williams said the event was an opportunity to give the keen swimmers a chance to try something new.

“We really wanted to expose them to how wonderful the whole event is,” she said.

“It’s good for the kids to get a chance to try it and show that it’s not just a sport for adults.”

The boys were back along the Esplanade yesterday cheering along the Ironman athletes.

“They were high-fiving everyone as they ran past,” Ms Williams said.

And her boys already have their sights set on next year’s event. “I don't’ know how we’ll wait a whole year before the next one,” she said.
